Hello, I am Nate Ax
I have been drawing and painting since I can remember. My interest started as a child in the early 2000s with dinosaurs. I have always had an immense interest in history and recreating those lost species helped me to feel a connection to the past. Later on in my teens and now into my 20s much of my work centers on the soon to be “Dinosaurs” of our time such as the Moose, Woodland Caribou, and other species that may be gone sooner than later.
A large part of my interest in this subject area also comes from reading books as a kid, especially Jack London’s work like “White Fang”. Growing up in west central Minnesota, an area dominated by agriculture there was little wilderness left to explore. I would catch crayfish in the creek near our town and cicadas on our elm trees. However, my imagination would take me to the last frontier where I was running a trap line and building a cabin. Those vivid dreams, almost memories you could say have shaped a lot of my interests throughout life.
Next to me for nearly all of this was man’s best friend. Growing up they were German Shorthairs wild and ever so affectionate. In adulthood my outdoor companions have been British Labradors, a yellow named Nova and a Chocolate named Walker. Hunting dogs and dogs in general also tend to make up a portion of my artwork because they are there with me every step of the way and I think everyone deserves a good dog and a piece of timeless art for their dog.
Rounding out my main interests is agriculture, growing up on what was once the prairie in west central MN it figuratively and physically surrounded my life. If not for the loss of farming in my family I likely would never have pursued art so fully. I have still found ways to be quite involved with agriculture first as an FFA member throughout high school, getting my bachelors in animal science with the goal of running a game farm and now as an adult becoming an agriculture food and natural resources educator.
I aim to walk the line between these various interests and create works that can help you to feel something whether a connection to the past or a future yet to come. I encourage you to reach out with your inspirations as well. There is no greater feeling in art than bringing someone’s vision to life.
My greatest inspiration is my wife Samantha and our two pups Nova and Walker.
